What is Design? How Does it Apply to Video Games?

In our world today, games have become very popular among all age groups. You will find that there are many kinds of games available in the market. These games can be played alone or with others. In this modern world, where you can even play online games as well, games have become even more popular.

In video games, those who play often make use of their keyboard or controllers to operate what’s on a video screen, including televisions and computer monitors as well. For the more adventurous ones, there are also board games such as solitaire, which some of us may remember from our childhood days. There are other games which use the body, for instance the Kinect.

The use of virtual environments is increasingly being incorporated into computer games today. Players will find that there are many video games which implement a first-person perspective. For example, players can virtually stand in the cockpit of a plane, and take control of it. They can look around, get out of the plane, and go on a journey within the virtual environments. Such is the capability of video games today.

Gamification is the process of incorporating elements of the real world into the digital world. In computer games, the player is not really placed in the cockpit of an airplane, but he or she can, and does control the flight through flight tactics, which includes the following: pilot awareness, weapon management, aircraft combat skills, environmental considerations, and so on. With this type of gamification, players must learn and master strategies which will be used while playing. In this way, the player will learn to think and act like a professional pilot in real life. He or she will also gain experience and knowledge from previous, real-life flight experiences.

A player may choose to play games that integrate real-world rules with imaginary rules. This is usually done in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). In such games, a player can choose to assume the role of a member of an organization. As he or she progresses through the game, he or she may choose to acquire new skills and abilities. The character can then engage in various activities within the game world as if those actions were real.

Gamification has become a popular approach to game design. It offers players a rich pool of experiences, knowledge and abilities which they can apply in their real-world lives. The value of such a system is that it allows the designer to make a wide range of games which closely follow specific, real world laws. For instance, a doctor who creates a video game in which a patient must survive a boob job surgery may become a surgeon who performs breast augmentation procedures in real life. These are only a few examples.
