Sports Physical Therapy

Sports (or sports) is any forms of typically organized, athletic physical activity that, through either organized or casual participation, attempt to use, develop or maintain physical aptitude and skills for the purpose of providing entertainment to its participants, and sometimes, spectators, and in some instances, both. The term can also cover sports competitions such as Olympic Games and summer Olympics. These events require a great deal of hard work, training and support from an enormous variety of people and are characterized by rigorous physical challenges, mental challenges and social skills development. This type of activity is the basis for many professional sports teams that ply their trade across various games and time slots. It can even be found in non-sport arenas such as school, colleges and families.

There are many different types of sports. Rollerblading, skateboarding, inline skating, wakeboarding, surfing, snorkeling, horseback riding, volleyball, basketball and softball are but a few examples. Each of these activities requires unique physical dexterity, athleticism and skill sets that are needed to excel in their respective sports. Some sports also rely on specific types of equipment and use the bodies own power and physical strength to move and perform in ways that are very demanding. As most sports are demanding physically, those who participate find it difficult to continue once they begin to experience the adverse physical affects of engaging in the sport.

Participation in sports can have many benefits and can promote health and well being for both the participant and his or her fans, family and friends. For the participant, participating in sports can prove extremely beneficial because it provides the opportunity to push oneself to greater physical exertion and to challenge oneself in new ways. For spectators, sports provide an outlet for friendliness and enjoyment that otherwise may not be possible. Additionally, for many people, sports provide a platform for self-expression that other forms of physical activity may be unable to provide.

The Renaissance Period and the beginnings of the nineteenth century witnessed a sudden resurgence in interest in all forms of competitive athletics, especially when professional teams and athletes began to emerge. Sports as an object of desire and a competitive pursuit became common place. These early enthusiasts of sports found that using the body in various physical activities could enhance their performance in other aspects of their lives while helping them develop a sense of their overall worth and social status in society. These early enthusiasts of sports also found that by participating in sports they were able to carve out some of their own individual identities in the highly competitive yet socially tumultuous times that the Renaissance was experiencing.

In the modern era, the twentieth century has witnessed a wide ranging popularity of sports that has seen a number of different athletic endeavors take root and spread throughout all levels of society. While there have always been some biases against certain sports in society, today almost every major sport that exists has been subjected to criticism from some groups or individuals, who claim that certain sports are less important than other sports. Despite these accusations of modern day critics, the popularity of sports throughout the world has increased steadily, with many people participating in organized sports and even the general public supporting more physical education and physical fitness. This has in turn created a huge demand for licensed fitness instructors, sports trainers and other individuals who have been professionally trained in the areas of exercise and health. This increase in demand for these kinds of training professionals has seen a rise in the number of positions that have been created within the last few years.

In line with the growing need for these kinds of sports professionals, there has also been a growth in the number of colleges and universities that offer degree courses that focus specifically on sports and physical education. Many of these programs have earned international recognition, allowing graduates to take their skills across the globe and into the professional sports industry. As students graduate and begin their careers in the sports industry, they often use their skills and education to train other athletes who may have the potential to one day become great sports icons. As competition for athletes in professional sports is increasing, the importance of sports and physical education training programs is becoming higher. If you have the drive and commitment to excel in this field, it is certainly possible to achieve a rewarding and long term career in the area of sports physical therapy.
